National Conference
Who
Young people from mixed-race backgrounds.
What
100 students from across the country took part in the first conference of its kind which explores future policy suggestions for people of mixed-race backgrounds.
Where
Lancashire County Cricket Club.
When
October 14th 2008, 9 4pm
Why
The last census showed that more than 50% of mixed-race people are under 16 and are projected to become the largest ethnic group in Britain by 2010. However, they appear to be the elephant in the classroom: obvious to everyone living in a British city yet invisible at a government/policy level.
Partnerships
Heritage Lottery Fund and Allah Iqbal Education Trust. Student attendees came from: Trafford, Manchester, Nottingham Nottinghamshire County, and Walsall.
Aims
To a make a positive contribution to the national mixed-race debate, talk about the 'stuff' they do not often get the opportunity to say. Inform policy makers on the use of appropriate terminology and challenge their absence from local and national policy.
